OUR STUDENTS

At The Universal English, we pay close attention and develop caring relationships with our students, allowing for the adaptation of curricula to meet the social, emotional, and educational needs of everyone. Our student experience is enriched by volunteer opportunities, class trips, and other exciting extracurricular activities.

Clubs & Activities

Students love social activities we have many to offer at Universal English. Every year we arrange student tours to football games, Formula One Grand Prix, cricket matches, Australian Open Tennis, snow trips and many other activities.

Unique to  our College is also “Active English Week”. We run this in the middle of the year and the last week of school where students improve their speaking ability and confidence building skills outside the classroom. We have singing competitions, cooking shows, drama and acting lessons, dancing and even yoga classes. All of our students rave about this week. You have to experience Active English Week for yourself. Only at Universal English!

  • What do I need to bring on my first day?
Universal English needs a copy of your passport, current visa, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and your Australian contact details (phone number, email and address), as detailed in your Welcome Letter. Please provide these to UE before or on the enrolment day.
  • What test will I take on the first day?
The first day Placement Test assesses your English level of grammar and writing. You will then meet a member of our Academic Team to do a speaking and listening test and be allocated to a class. If you are enrolling in an exam preparation course (EAP/IELTS or Cambridge), you will also do a reading test.
  • How and when will I get my textbook?
When you have completed your enrolment and been allocated to a class by our Academic Team, Reception will provide you with your textbook.
  • Can I start my course any day of the week?
Mondays are Enrolment and Orientation day, and you may begin your class on Tuesday, except when Monday is a Public Holiday, in which case Enrolment and Orientation happens on Tuesday. If you cannot attend campus on your first day, please contact Reception: reception@ulgroup.com.au
  • What should if I am absent during my course?
If your circumstances change, and you need to travel overseas or you will be absent for an extended period, please contact us immediately for assistance. If you are unwell, you should see a Doctor and obtain a medical certificate. Please provide medical certificates to Reception as soon as you have seen a doctor.
  • Can I change my class schedule?
We have classes in the morning and evening and, subject to the availability of your course and level, you can change your schedule. To do so, please contact Reception: reception@ulgroup.com.au
  • How often do students progress?
Each course and level is 12 weeks in duration. Most students will be in a level for 12 weeks before progressing, and must be in a level for at least 4 weeks to obtain a certificate.
  • Can I book a holiday during my course?
If you are an International Student Visa holder, you must agree to the number of weeks you will take a holiday during a course before you sign your Offer Letter. If enough notice is given, we can usually help you to change the dates of your holiday during your course, however, we cannot add additional holiday weeks. However, in some special circumstances, you can apply for a course suspension.
  • Can I transfer from a General English course to an exam preparation course (EAP/IELTS or Cambridge)?
If you have the English proficiency level required for entry to an exam preparation course, you are welcome to talk to us about changing your course.
  • What kind of activities does Universal English offer?
Universal English emphasises the student experience. Your class will enjoy frequent excursions, where you can see more of Melbourne and practice your English in the real world. We also have student events once a month, and we run an action-packed Active English Week twice a year. Check UE’s Instagram and see our Monthly Activities Calendar for more information.
  • What support services are available?
If you are experiencing any challenges during your time at Universal English, please talk to a member of our Student Support team at Reception. We also encourage students to meet our Student Counsellor to gain support and guidance regarding any issues. Our website also lists other support options for international students: https://www.universalenglish.edu.au/student-services
  • How do I get my certificate?
When you finish your course, if your final attendance is more than 80%, you will be provided with a certificate. Reception will email this to you, and you may also have a hard copy. The 80% attendance requirement applies to all students.
